OpenShift 4.22 pairs JobSet GA with a preview MCP server
Live Red Hat documentation confirms a production JobSet operator, a preview cluster-diagnostics MCP server and security changes that matter to multitenant operators.
OpenShift Container Platform 4.22 uses Kubernetes 1.35 with CRI-O and is an Extended Update Support release. Its live documentation separates one production AI-workload controller from a preview agent interface while adding security and edge-platform changes that affect how operators plan adoption.
JobSet reaches general availability
The JobSet Operator 1.0 is the initial generally available release, issued February 12. Red Hat documents it as a controller for coordinated, large-scale workloads on OpenShift, including high-performance computing and AI training.
A JobSet groups multiple Kubernetes Jobs behind one API and supports coordinated failure handling, stable networking and ordered startup. Red Hat’s installation documentation requires cluster-admin access and cert-manager Operator for Red Hat OpenShift, and installs the operator through the stable-v1.0 channel. For AI teams, the practical change is a supported controller for distributed jobs whose workers need to start and recover as a unit rather than a collection of separately managed Jobs.
MCP remains a preview
The core 4.22 release notes introduce an MCP server for OpenShift as a Technology Preview. Red Hat describes it as an AI tool for diagnosing cluster problems. That status matters: it is not a generally available path for delegating cluster operations to an agent, and production plans should not treat it as equivalent to the supported JobSet controller.
The documentation also makes the boundary visible in its organization. JobSet has a versioned 1.0 release note, installation requirements and a stable update channel. The MCP server appears in the Technology Preview section of the core release notes.
Security and edge changes deserve separate review
OpenShift 4.22 enables kubelet credential verification for cached private images in multitenant clusters. Administrators can use imagePullCredentialsVerificationPolicy in a KubeletConfig resource so a namespace must present valid registry credentials even when an image is already cached on a node. Red Hat warns operators to use NeverVerifyAllowlistedImages, rather than NeverVerifyPreloadedImages, when the default feature gate is active.
The release also moves two-node OpenShift with fencing from Technology Preview to general availability. That gives constrained edge sites a supported two-node high-availability design, but it is an infrastructure choice separate from the AI-workload features.
What platform teams should do
Treat the three changes as different adoption tracks. JobSet 1.0 is the supported route for coordinated distributed workloads. The MCP server belongs in non-production evaluation while it remains a Technology Preview. Cached-image credential verification and two-node fencing should go through their own security and availability reviews before a 4.22 rollout. The shared release number does not give every capability the same support status.
